A large number of Lewiston High School students were able to learn the fundamentals of city and government today as they took part in the annual Student Government Day.

About 50 students from Lewiston Comprehensive High School and St. Dominic Regional High took part in the day-long program, assembling early in the morning at the city building for an indoctrination speech by Mayor John Orestis at the City Council Chambers.

Shortly after this, they were taken to the respective offices where they were shown around and introduced to various city workers. During the day the students actively participated in the functions carried out by the real officeholders.

Former U.S. Sens. Bob Dole and George Mitchell, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn and Auburn businessman Shep Lee are among the well-known people who have already made donations for a memorial planned for native son, Edmund S. Muskie.

“It’s been great so far,” said Rich Allen, treasurer of the Muskie Memorial Committee. “The responses we’ve received so far have come just from letters, no phone calls yet.”

The committee began sending out requests for donations for the three paneled granite monument only a few weeks ago. So far, $4,000 has been received from well-known and local people along with $20,000 from the town at last year’s annual town meeting. Nearly 25 percent of the $100,000 goal has been raised.
