The next meeting of the Androscoggin Historical Society, Tuesday afternoon March 26, will be devoted to an exposition of the aims and accomplishments of Le Centre d’Heritage Franco-American, a cultural and historical organization, that, within the past years, has brought much distinction to the State of Maine, and particularly to the Lewiston-Auburn urban community where its center of activity is located. The speaker will be Mrs. Jo Anne Lapointe of Auburn, one of the organization’s founders and its present curator.

As its title indicates, this organization seeks not only to preserve the historic traditions that French-speaking people coming in great numbers from Canada, years ago, brought to this and other Maine communities, but to keep alive the cultural arts that were likewise their heritage.

Margaret Milishcusky clapped and smiled as a birthday cake was rolled up the aisle toward her seat at the head table in the Bolster Heights Nursing Home community room. She loved being the center of attention at her 107th birthday party, a landmark that may have made her the oldest person living in Maine.

Her smile lit the room as picture after picture was snapped: with her 83-year-old daughter. Vega Littlefield of Lewiston, and 81 year-old son, Anthony Milishousky of Rumford, with 3-year-old great-great-granddaughter Brittany Myrick: with staff members and Auburn City councilor Gerard Dennison, who presented birthday greetings from the city. Two other daughters living in Florida were unable to attend the party.

She was born March 18, 1892 in Lithuania, the daughter of a prosperous farmer and landowner, said her granddaughter, Sue Levasseur of Lewiston. Hard times were soon to come, though and she emigrated to America in 1914.
