AUBURN — Gordon Smith, known in the central Maine area for his skill in leading birding walks, plans to present a talk, “Birding by Ear,” during the Stanton Bird Club meeting on Monday, April 1.

The talk runs from 4-6 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.; the public is welcome.

Smith, a member of the club and board member of Merrymeeting Audubon, is an avid birder who began going on birding trips before he could walk. On trips in Massachusetts, Illinois and Michigan his father taught him not only how to look for birds, but how to listen for their songs and calls as well.

According to eBird, Smith has recorded 876 trips and 200 species at Wharton Point, at the head of Maquoit Bay in Brunswick since his first trip there in November 2010.

The Stanton Bird Club owns and manages the Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in Lewiston as well as the Woodbury Nature Sanctuary in Monmouth and Litchfield. More information about the club can be found at stantonbirdclub.org and on the club’s Facebook page.
