100 Years Ago: 1924

Policemen Sheffield and McGraw seized 5 one gallons of alcohol near the Grand Trunk freight shed Tuesday evening. The owner or owners skipped off into the darkness so that no arrests followed.

The two officers received a tip early in the evening that the booze was to be delivered to that spot in an automobile. They at once went to Lincoln Street, hiding behind a building.

At 8 o’clock Tuesday evening a touring car drove into the alley, a man deposited the cans of alcohol and drove away. Before another man could approach the alcohol the two police officers pounced on it.

50 Years Ago: 1974

A new Miss Maine Universe will be chosen Sunday when a state pageant will be held at the Steer House, Lisbon Street, Lewiston at two o’clock.

An Auburn Woman, Mrs. Richard Lachance is serving as coordinator of the Pageant at the local level and points out that applicants to participate Sunday are still available. She can be contacted at her home on Ninth Street, Auburn.

Ten different communities in the state will be represented and the present Miss Maine, Miss Brenda Davis of Farmington, will be present.

Among the judges will be Mayor John C. Orestis, Lewiston and Atty. Charles Abbott, Auburn.

25 Years Ago: 1999

A percussion trio from the Portland Symphony Orchestra will perform the “The Enormous Turnip,” Kinderkonzerts for Children ages 3 to – at 9:30 and 10:30 am and 1 pm at Manchester Elementary.
