Two members of the University of Maine at Farmington men’s track and field team earned North Atlantic Conference awards this week.
Senior Alixx Canwell was named the NAC Co-Field Athlete of the Week and freshman Alex Crews was named Rookie of the Week.
Canwell opened the SNHU Spring Invite this past weekend by breaking his own program record for hammer throw on his sixth and final attempt of 53.77 meters. The Hall-Dale graduate and former Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale football player also had a pair of top-five finishes in shot put and discus, placing second in shot put with a 13.87-meter throw and finishing fifth in discus with a 36.84-meter best toss. He qualified for the New England Regional Championships for hammer throw and shot put with his marks. It’s the fourth NAC weekly award for Canwell in his career.
Crews is the first NAC Rookie of the Week for the men’s team since 2021. At the SNHU Spring Invite, he placed top ten in both the hammer throw and discus. In discus, the Winslow grad placed third with a best throw of 37.97 meters, which was a personal record and second best in program history. He placed tenth in hammer throw with a distance of 33.18 meters.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
HUSSON 17, UMF 1: Sophomore attacker Ruby McMinis scored the lone goal during the third quarter for the Beavers (3-4, 0-1 NAC) in their loss against the Eagles (2-5, 1-0) in each team’s conference opener Wednesday in Bangor.
McMinis’ goal was assisted by Abby Trefsger and broke Husson’s 11-0 scoring spree to start the game.
Three Husson players scored a hat trick to tie for the game-high in goals: Hall-Dale graduate Averi Baker, Laela Martinez and Maranacook grad Natalie Whitten.
The Eagles outshot the Beavers 43-12. UMF goalie Skye Contour finished with 14 saves. Husson played both keepers, with Lewiston grad Emma Begin stopping all four shots she faced and Lacey Scanlon saving one of two shots.
