John Gawler will perform  at the Oasis of Music beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at Trinity Commons in Lewiston.

Gawler is a familiar face on the music scene in Maine, especially with his role, along with his wife Ellen, as elders of the Gawler Family Band, one of Maine’s most popular folk music acts. He is a singer of many songs, new and old, that tell the stories of who we are and what we have done and still might do — a singer who loves nothing better than having his audience join voices with his own. Gawler accompanies himself on banjo and guitar. He is acknowledged as a master of clawhammer-style banjo and Mississippi delta blues guitar styles, and is known to get quite creative within those frameworks. He also wields a five-string baritone banjo which the Oasis of Music audience can only hope he packs for this gig. Gawler’s music has brought him throughout Maine and New England and to at least four continents with many groups, including Project Troubadour and several state department tours with Old Grey Goose International.  In every place he has met, visited and played with local folk musicians, and has brought some of that seasoning home with him on every occasion.

The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly thirty minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St., Lewiston. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
