AUBURN — School Committee members voted unanimously Wednesday night to hire Assistant Superintendent Susan Dorris to be superintendent for the next three years, starting in July.
She will succeed Cornelia Brown, who is retiring after this school year after serving since 2020. She congratulated Dorris and expressed support for her selection.
Dorris worked her way up through Auburn public schools, working as an educational technician, classroom teacher, literacy coach and building principal, committee Chairwoman Pamela Albert said.
Dorris’ history working in city schools has given her an understanding of the School Department and its needs, Albert said.
Superintendent Search Committee members were impressed by Dorris’ thoughtful and collaborative approach to leadership.
“It is clear that she has a genuine passion and is motivated by seeing students succeed,” Albert said.
Dorris thanked multiple people who helped her along the way, along with Brown for her guidance and setting the district up for success.
“I’m truly honored and excited to be selected as the next superintendent of schools for the Auburn School Department,” she said. “It’s a very proud moment for me.”
She said she hopes to build upon the department’s strong foundation and provide “excellent” education for all Auburn students. She will work to strengthen systems and boost student achievement through high-quality instruction, family and community engagement, and professional development for staff, she said.
“I look forward to a smooth transition in July,” Dorris said. “And once again, I’m honored and grateful for this incredible opportunity to give back to my community, thank you.”
There was very little discussion among members before the vote.
