100 Years Ago: 1924

Five adults went on the Stanton Bird Walk in Auburn, yesterday morning under the leadership of B.A. Chase. A report of the following birds seen are: Redwing blackbird, crow, evening grosbeak, gull, junco, meadowlark, phoebe, robin and song sparrow.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Thomas Mahard, twice named actor of the year at Bates College, will play Mr. Applegate, the Devil himself, in the Lewiston-Auburn Little Theater’s production of “Damn Yankees.”

In the roll he fulfills a lifetime ambition to play Mr. Applegate.

A native of Boston, born of a musical comedy family” and watching his father design sets for the Boston Summer Musical Theater led to his ambition to become a theatrical performer.

Attending Bates College, he was selected “Actor of the Year” as a junior, in recognition of his performance as the mute king in “Once Upon a Mattress.” In his senior year he was co-recipient of the same award for his portrayal of Malvolio in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” The role also gained him recognition of the 12 best actors in New England.

Presently he is a teacher in the Auburn schools.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Photographs by Dee Peppe will be featured through April 17, at Creative Photographic Art Center of Maine, 59 Canal Street, in Lewiston. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm.
