Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, representing more than 90% of our national workforce. Here in Maine, we have nearly 600 active volunteers supporting our lifesaving mission.

I proudly serve as board chair for the Central and Mid Coast Maine Chapter of the Red Cross. This Volunteer Month, we are proud to honor these community heroes who bring our mission to life every day through the generous gift of their time and talents. Because of their commitment, Maine families can depend on the Red Cross to be there when emergencies strike.

Last year, Red Cross volunteers in Maine supported 1,800 blood drives, assisted 1,500 veterans and military families, responded to 281 local disasters including home fires, and installed 1,167 free smoke alarms, focusing on our most vulnerable communities.

Today, the combination of heartbreaking home fires and the worsening climate crisis is creating a critical need for more disaster volunteers. From late December through January, our team supported more than 300 Mainers who had been displaced by historic flooding. Our volunteers helped provide care, comfort, and shelter for those forced from their homes. They served more than 600 meals and snacks and distributed 850 relief items, including comfort kits and clean-up supplies, to those in need.

This Volunteer Month, I hope people join us in thanking all those who volunteer across our state.

Dr. Patti Pelletier, Turner
