DEAR SUN SPOTS: Help celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up your community and having the opportunity to win a free meal at a local restaurant.

The Optimist Club wants you to join them on Earth Day weekend, prior to Earth Day, April 22, to spend at least one hour walking your neighborhood with family, friends and co-workers. Bring a trash bag and collect roadside trash while enjoying some fresh air and exercise.

If you are willing to commit to volunteer for this cleanup effort and want to register to win a meal at one of our local community restaurants, please contact any Optimist Club member or call me at 207-783-5269 or send an email to gwmathews91@gmail.com.

If Earth Day is not a convenient day for you to volunteer, any day prior or a few days after Earth Day on Monday will work. Either way, call or email to register to win one of the many restaurant gift certificates to be given to community volunteers. If you send us a picture of your Earth Day group, it will be posted on our Optimist Club website. — George, no town

ANSWER: I’ve taken part in an Earth Day cleanup effort in my community over the past few years, and we’ve formed a wonderful group of like-minded individuals who work together as a cohesive team. I’m always impressed with how much debris we can gather in one just one hour. We often keep going, then head out for lunch afterwards. It doesn’t feel like work at all.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Would any Sun Spotters be interested in volunteering to run a wholly independent museum shop for Androscoggin Historical Society? Reach out by calling 207-784-0586 or emailing info@androhistory.org and let’s chat! — Trish, Lewiston

ANSWER: AHS is looking for a volunteer independent of the museum who would be willing to take on the responsibility of getting a shop up and running. Responsibilities could include executing a plan, finding, and supervising volunteers, merchandising, and setting daily schedules. This sounds like an excellent opportunity for the right person to be their own “boss,” and to use their skills and background to benefit the museum and the community. If you’re interested in more details, call Trish, and also check out the AHS website at https://androhistory.org/.
