Books Make Good Friends

By Jane Mount

Books Make Good Friends, a brightly illustrated picture book for readers of all ages, with pictures of hundreds of books and their titles, reminded me of Where’s Waldo! I found myself looking through the pages, searching for the books I had read. I was amazed at how many I could write on my list! To name a few…Pax, The One and Only Ivan, Starfish, Bridge to Terabithia, The Snowy Day, Goodnight Moon, and so very many others. If you are an eager reader, your list will be long!

The main character, Lotti, lives with her Mom, Dad, and little brother, Nox. She thinks her parents talk too much and her brother tells jokes that she does not consider to be funny. She spends much time in her room with her cat, Ramona, and her best friends… all her books. She can stay in her room reading her books and travel anywhere and everywhere!

Lotti has no friends at school and prefers to stay home rather than venture out into her neighborhood. How does Dad lure her into their community? After their adventure, Lotti thinks that perhaps the world isn’t as boring as she thought.

What does she do to finally make friends at school? What do her new friends like to do?

In the Author’s Notes, Jane Mount describes how she was like her character, Lotti, when she was younger.

Enjoy Books make good friends, and Lotti’s cookie recipe at the end.
