The editor of the Lewiston-Journal has been invited to deliver the address at the annual meeting of the Society of Maine at Buffalo, N.Y., but has been compelled to decline.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Essays on the question of handling credit have won two Edward Little High School girls prizes which are to be presented to them Wednesday night at the annual Bosses Night of the local chapter of Credit Women, International and the Credit Bureau of Lewiston-Auburn.

The winners, Christine DuBois, a sophomore, who elected to write the essay, and Nancy Thurston, a junior, who wrote it as a class assignment, were notified of the winning Friday by Mrs. Marguerite Berube, credit department supervisor at the Credit Bureau of Lewiston-Auburn, and Mrs. Marie Fabrizio, president of Credit Women’s International chapter of which Mrs. Berube also is a member and a past president.

Title of this year’s essay was “As a Consumer How Should I Use Credit?”

The girls and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. DuBois and Mr. and Mrs. Allen R. Thurston, will be guests at Bosses Night.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Mmmm-mmm-good.

From “Bugs on a Log” to “Ice Cream Bread, a variety of recipes created by kids were judged Sunday afternoon in the fourth annual Healthy Snack Challenge sponsored by the Maine Dietetic Association.

Sean Boucher’s “Apple Magnificent” took top honors in the division for 5 to 9 year-olds. Second place in the younger division went to Hannah Miller, 9 of Bath, for her “Fabulous Fruit Roll Ups.” Third place in the younger division went to Siimon Thompson’s epic creation called “The Titanic.”

Lindsey Desjardins, 13 of Madawaska, was first place winner in the 10 to 18 year-old division with Lindsey’s Frosted Oranges.” “Goulash a la St. Patrick” entered by Patrick Ranalla, 13 of Freeport, won second place. The “Fruity Breakfast Parfait” made by Ciara Cyr, 12 of Madawaska, came in third.

“Ice Cream Bread,” was the entry from Stephanie Tranter, 13 of Gray. Danielle Fortin, 15, of Madawaska, “Energy Balls.” And “Apple Honey Sandwiches” was entered by Austin Miller. Hope Percy entered “Convertible Cars, for kids who like to play with their food. Robbie MCCollough, 13, of Yarmouth created a “Yogurt and Cornflake Delight.”

Evan Hultz, 11 of Portland said his “Smoothie Surprise” contained grape-nuts, and Lisa Baruski, 9 of Orono made slush from frozen fruits.Lindsey Martin and Erin Knight, who are classmates in St. Albans, were side by side during the competition. Lindsey entered a fruit salad and Erin created race cars.

Karl MacDougal, 7, of St. Albans created “Bugs on a Log” and Ian Grover of Corinna presented “Tortilla Apple Jack.”
