Auburn Public Library is planning events for Earth Day, Monday, April 22, at 49 Spring St.

A container gardening workshop is set for 3:30 p.m. People can join the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center garden team to plant mini-greenhouse containers from recycled materials. Containers, soil, and seeds will be provided.

This is a free session for all ages. Paper applications for 2024 community garden plots also will be available at both programs, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

For more information visit linktr.ee/communitygardens.

Reservations are requested.

The event precedes the 5 p.m. program, “Creating Climate Resilient Gardens and Backyards,” presented by the Androscoggin Valley Water & Soil Conservation District.

The talk will cover ways to reduce one’s lawn (and associated maintenance) by swapping it for pollinator gardens, edible landscapes, rain gardens, vegetative buffers, groundcovers, wildflower meadows, and more. The presentation will also highlight specific species to plant to support pollinators and other wildlife, prepare for a warming climate, and help with soil erosion.

The district will also highlight its Conservation Landscape Certification program, a free checklist available to help landowners improve their properties for wildlife habitat, water and soil quality, and overall ecosystem support.

After the workshop, people stick around to ask questions, talk with staff, peruse resources, and grab some free garden products. There will be seeds, gardening books, seed kits, garden tools, and an opportunity to win a free rain barrel!. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Reservations are requested. This event is funded by the Androscoggin Valley Stormwater Working Group and the Davis Foundation.
