OXFORD — On Sunday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, Western Foothills Land Trust invites you to Smith Bridge Preserve on a unique ecological exploration of the world of vernal pools. These temporary, shallow bodies of water appear in mid-spring and typically dry up by late summer. During their short existence, they are the home and breeding ground for a variety of animals such as frogs, salamanders, and the rare fairy shrimp.
The program will be led by Emlyn Crocker, an expert from Lakes Environmental Association, who will provide hands-on experience exploring the life found in vernal pools on the preserve property. As Emlyn shares her knowledge about the diverse wildlife species that depend on these temporary water bodies for their survival, she will also provide tips on how to safely handle these creatures.
Alyssa Andrews, Stewardship Director for Western Foothills Land Trust, will also be present to share insights into the history and ecological importance of Smith Bridge Preserve, which was acquired by the trust in 2021.
Participants will meet at Smith Bridge Preserve, located at 577 Allen Hill Road, Oxford, Maine. Please wear waterproof footwear, and long pants, and bring water and a snack. This program is free and open to all ages. Registration is required by contacting the Trust at info@wfltmaine.org.
