Maurice R. Moreau

AUBURN – Maurice R. Moreau, 79, of Lewiston, beloved husband, dad, and grandfather passed away on April 18, 2024 in Auburn, one week shy of his 80th birthday.

Maurice was born in Lewiston to Romeo N. and Liane (Toussaint) Moreau. Throughout his life, Maurice was a faithful servant of his church, community, and country. Maurice served in the United States Coast Guard for four years, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years, and was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Jay.

He spent countless hours volunteering and was always ready with a helping hand. Maurice saw the best in people, treating everyone he met with dignity and compassion. He always spoke proudly of his wife, daughters, and grandchildren, who loved him dearly.

On the day Maurice graduated from Lewiston High School in 1962, he left to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard. He served through June 1966, achieving Commissary-man (E-5) within 2.5 years.

He met the love of his life, Barbara (Hebert) Moreau, and they were married on June 24, 1967. Maurice and Barbara raised their two daughters in Jay where he worked for International Paper for 20 years.

He started studying and was appointed as a Financial Advisor in 1988. In 1994 he earned his Certified Financial Planner degree through the American College of Financial Planning. He worked with IDS Financial Services, currently known as Ameriprise Financial Services. He received his Charted Financial Consultant (ChFC) professional designation in 2005 and was inducted in the prestigious Diamond Ring Club for his achievement with client services in 2006. When he partially retired in 2013, he worked part-time with his daughter, Michelle, until he fully retired in April 2017.

While still in high school, Maurice was active in the Columbian Squires, a youth group of the Knights of Columbus. As an adult, he was active with Knights of Columbus Council #320. Over his tenure he held several offices including Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. But his most gratifying position was heading the distribution of gifts for Operation Santa Clause from 1975 to 2008. He was a Charter Member of the St. Rose Centennial Assembly #1898 of the Fourth Degree. Maurice served as District Deputy for four years where he, Father Poussard, and many parishioners of St. Louis Church in Auburn established a new council, currently known as Andy Valley Council. He also served at the state level as a Community Director and State Youth Director.

Maurice enjoyed watching sports, especially football, hockey and basketball. But he found the most joy when watching any sports played by his daughters and later his grandsons in Maine and Texas.

His own passion was golf, especially with his wife Barbara and friends John Chouinard, Bill Harlow, and Wayne Sherman. He was a member at Turner Highland Golf Course in Turner and also played with the Jay-Livermore Golf Travel League. Maurice enjoyed his summer garden, caring for his small apple orchard and donating most of his apples to family, friends, neighbors, and food banks.
