100 Years Ago: 1924

Plans are on the way among a group of Auburn businessmen for the organization of a local branch of the nationally known Lion’s Club, which is similar to Rotary and Kiwanis. Meetings have been held for preliminary plans but those interested are not ready to give out information yet.

It is understood that the idea is to have only Auburn businessmen in the club which would meet for weekly meetings and dinners the same as the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs include members from both cities.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Martin Andrucki has been appointed instructor in speech and theater at Bates College, President Thomas Hedley Reynolds announced today.

Andrucki received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1967 where he graduated magna cum laude. He was awarded an M.A. from Harvard University in 1969 and is presently working toward the PHD at Harvard.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Andrucki was a Proudfit Fellow in English at Columbia and a National Defense Education Act Fellow in English at Harvard.

Prior to coming to Bates Andrucki was a teaching fellow in general education and English at Harvard where he was a member of the Board of Tutors.

He was also founder and director of the Winthrop House Drama Society and director of Theater Productions at the Loeb Drama Center at Harvard.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Bonnie Loubier has been hired as a landscape designer/estimator by Gammon Landscape Nursery Inc. on the Turner Road in Auburn.

She graduated from the Plant and Soil Technology College in 1998 and is a certified nursery in 1998 and is a certified nursery and landscape professional. She also holds a state license as a First Class Landscape Arborist. She was previously employed as a horticulturist at the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta, where she worked with Master Gardeners and the Maine Conservation Corps revitalizing the Arboretum’s display gardens. She completed her summer internship at Estabrook’s Farm and Greenhouse in Yarmouth, as a nursery/perennial salesperson. She also worked at the Inn By The Sea in Cape Elizabeth as an assistant to the head gardener.

Loubier lives in Litchfield with her daughter, Heather and husband, Joe.
