Michael T. Harkins Jr.

TABOR CITY, N.C. and WATERBORO – Michael T. Harkins Jr., 82, of Tabor City, N.C. and Waterford (also formerly of East Waterboro) died Wednesday, April 10, 2024 in Whiteville, N.C.

He was born on April 19, 1941 in Lewiston to Michael T. Harkins Sr. and Marjorie Ham Harkins. He was raised and educated in Lewiston. He was a veteran of Vietnam, having served in the Marines, where he also played trumpet in the Marine Corps band.

On June 17, 1967 he married June M. Fortier of Berwick. Together they had two daughters. Mike retired from Maine Medical Center where he worked for over 30 years as a lead engineer. He was also a volunteer fire fighter and EMT for many years.

Mike absolutely loved music and spent many years playing trumpet. He learned how to play the organ and loved playing live for anyone who would listen. He would also record music to give to family and friends. Mike enjoyed hiking in his younger years and loved to go out dancing with his wife June.

Survivors include his loving wife, June Harkins of Tabor City, N.C.; a daughter, Kelly and her husband Ed Pelletier or Tabor City, N.C., a daughter, Shannon and her husband Joe Shannon of Canaan N.H.; and grandchildren Peyton Pelletier, Abi Shannon and Carter Shannon. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by all six of his siblings; and his parents.

A celebration of life will be held in June upon return to Maine.
