BASEBALL

The Hartford Yard Goats overcame a 4-1 deficit and broke the game open with five runs in the seventh inning, rallying for the third straight game to beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 12-5, in an Eastern League game Sunday in Hartford, Connecticut.

Sterlin Thompson was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBI for the Yard Goats, who moved ahead of Portland for first place in the Northeast Division.

Nick Yorke had two hits and scored twice for the Sea Dogs, who led 4-1 after a two-run double by Yorke and an RBI triple by Matthew Lugo in the third inning.

Sea Dogs catcher Mickey Gasper homered in the eighth.

Wikelman Gonzalez struck out eight and allowed only one hit through five innings, but Portland’s bullpen was unable to protect the lead. Gonzalez walked one batter and hit two.

The Sea Dogs begin a six-game homestand Tuesday against the Reading Fightin Phils.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Scott McLaughlin won his second straight race at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, giving Team Penske a much-needed triumph just days after IndyCar erased Josef Newgarden’s victory and also disqualified McLaughlin from the season opener.

Penske’s fuel strategy worked to perfection, with McLaughlin and teammate Will Power finishing 1-2 – the same order they started in.

HOCKEY

NHL: Valeri Nichushkin recorded his first career hat trick, goalie Alexandar Georgiev turned in another strong showing and the Colorado Avalanche beat the visiting Winnipeg Jets, 5-1, to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round playoff series.

• Elias Lindholm scored 1:02 into overtime as the visiting Vancouver Canucks stunned Nashville 4-3 and grabbed a 3-1 series lead.

Brock Boeser recorded his first hat trick in the playoffs. He scored on Vancouver’s first shot, then got the Canucks into overtime by scoring twice in the final 2:49 of regulation. His third came with 6.2 seconds left.

BASEBALL

MLB: Aaron Judge homered in the first inning, Anthony Rizzo went 4 for 4 and hit his 300th career homer, and Anthony Volpe added a three-run shot on his 23rd birthday as the visiting New York Yankees defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 15-5.

Judge went 3 for 4 with three RBI, including a 441-foot solo shot.

• Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel blew his second straight save and departed with back tightness as the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 7-6 victory at Baltimore.

• Kevin Gausman pitched seven solid innings for his first victory of the season, and the Toronto Blue Jays stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory in Toronto.

• Erick Fedde pitched seven-hit ball into the ninth inning, and the Chicago White Sox completed a sweep of their three-game series against visiting Tampa Bay, 4-2.

GOLF

PGA: Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

LPGA: Hannah Green won the JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles.

Green closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 12-under 272 and beat Maja Stark by three strokes.

LIV: Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament in Australia by one stroke.

Steele shot a final round 68 for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198, earning his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday with a successful title defense in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic at Duluth, Georgia, closing with a 5-under 67 for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.

A stroke behind Paul Broadhurst after matching the tournament record Saturday with a 64, Ames had two eagles in the final round. He won by four strokes, finishing at 14-under 202.

Broadhurst, a 58-year-old Englishman coming off a victory last weekend, closed with a 72 to tie for second with Doug Barron (69).

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Arsenal kept up its push for the Premier League title with a 3-2 win at Tottenham, holding on after it raced to a 3-0 halftime lead.

• Erling Haaland came off the bench after missing two games because of an injury, and his goal in the 71st minute sealed a 2-0 win for Manchester City at Nottingham Forest.

City remained one point behind Arsenal, with four matches remaining – one more than Arsenal.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Lyon will play Barcelona in the final after beating French rival Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the semifinal second leg, and 5-3 on aggregate.

The May 25 final in Bilbao, Spain, will be a rematch of the 2019 and 2022 finals, both won by Lyon, the most successful club in the competition with eight titles.

FRANCE: Paris Saint-Germain won its record-extending 12th French league title, and its 10th in the last 12 seasons, when Monaco lost 3-2 at Lyon.

TENNIS

MADRID OPEN: The two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continues to make a successful return from injury, cruising past Thiago Seyboth Wild in the third round, 6-3, 6-3.
