Smuggling booze from Maine into New Brunswick doesn’t seem to be in strict accord with prevailing notions of the rum traffic, but those whose business keeps them in touch with the situation say such is the condition which now exists.

People are rallying around Melissa Smith and her daughter, MyKayla, 3, after neither the state nor the town has stepped forward to erect two “Deaf Child” signs near their home on busy Route 156.

Smith said Friday that more than 100 residents have signed a petition requesting the town install the cautionary signs. State agencies have been calling her and are willing to help her, Smith said.

Employees at Boralex Stratton Energy Inc. in Stratton are willing to buy and install the signs using money from their employee fund, an official said.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
