The Lewiston Contradance presents caller Marie Wendt and Le Bon Truc leading our third-Friday dance beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Trinity Commons in Lewiston. The event is, in fact, known as “Bal Folk,” a slightly different form of dance from New England contradance.

Band member Steve Gruverman says, “Bal Folk is a popular kind of get-together, in parts of Europe, for community dancing. (Much like contradancing here in New England). It draws on traditional dance and music, mostly from the rich heritage of different regions of France. You’ll find a wide range of dances – in circles and lines, by yourself or with a partner. But you won’t need to come with a partner or even have any dance experience. We’ve chosen a program intended to be fun and easy-to-learn for all – kids and grown-ups,  experienced dancers or not. All dances will be led and taught by Marie Wendt, who has been studying, sharing and teaching this tradition for many years.”

The true flavor of Bal Folk comes through with a live band. Le Bon Truc, a trio of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists, has been playing this repertoire for over ten years.

Admission is $10 for adults, under age 18 free. Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St., Lewiston. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
