Marcel R. Roy

AUBURN – Marcel R. Roy, 70, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday morning at The Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn. Marcel was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston on Dec. 19, 1953. He was a son of the late Gerard and Georgette (Bernier) Roy. He attended St. Peter’s School in Lewiston graduating in 1967. He then attended St. Dominic Regional High School graduating in the class of 1971. He was a great athlete, but suffered a serious eye injury, losing sight in one eye. His father told him he could no longer play hockey and risk losing his good eye. In the 1960’s and early 70’s there were no face shields. Marcel saw that goalies wore face mask therefore he decided he would become a one-eyed goalie as an eighth grader. He then went on to be a four year starter and allstate goalie at St. Doms. St. Doms has a rich heritage of great goalies and Marcel is certainly in the discussion as one of the best. He is unquestionably the greatest one-eyed goalie to play the game of Hockey. He was not only a great hockey player, he was also an outstanding soccer player, breaking the scoring record of his best friend in his Senior Year at St. Doms. He was chosen as the St. Doms outstanding student athlete of 1971. In 2018, he was inducted into The St. Doms Hall of Fame.

He was a very proud active member of Prince of Peace Parish who served as an Attendant for Adoration until his illness no longer allowed him to. He spent his entire working career at The Lewiston Public Works for 47 years, most of these years as one of their most respected hard working foreman. He truly enjoyed his part time job as a zamboni driver at The Colisee which he did for about 20 years. On March 31, 1979, he married the love of his life, Carol Masselli. Together they worked and lived their entire lives in Lewiston raising three children. He was a man of great faith who had a very strong devotion to The Holy Eucharist. During his long illness, he never complained and always talked about how grateful he was to God for all his blessings. First of all his parents who nurtured his faith in God. He was especially grateful for his wife Carol. He admired her for the love she put into his caretaking during his illness. He was also grateful for his three children, his grandchildren, his very loving brother and sisters and his many, many close friends.

Marcel is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol, his son Matthew Roy, his daughters: Nicole Bell and husband Matt, Jennifer Roy and partner Tim Girard, his grandchildren: Adrianna and Nadia Roy, Jacob and Johanna Bell, his brother Gerard Roy and his husband Jaime Stallings of California, his sisters: Pauline Nadeau of Waterville and Louise Mecervier of Lewiston, several nieces and nephews, many cherished friends and his beloved dog “Charlie”.
