No such ovation as was accorded Geraldine Farrar in Lewiston City Hall, Thursday evening, has been given to any singer in Lewiston, not even excepting the beloved Schumann-Heink.

With hands, feet and voices the audience paid tribute to her beauty, her voice, her magnetism and her consummate art, in applause loud, long and insistent, rising in volume, with calls for Farrar when she failed to appear after her final goodnight. But “which she will, she will; and when she won’t, she won’t,” and that’s that.

Besides, Geraldine knows better than to spoil a spectacular exit. She is as provocative in her own personality as in her role of “Carmen,” and she prefers to leave her audience hungry for more rather than all fed up.

About three dozen applications to sell state lottery tickets have been picked up in Lewiston-Auburn since the application forms became available Monday at state liquor stores throughout Maine. The director of the Maine State Lottery, Christo Anton, told The Journal today that his Augusta office has been receiving the applications at a rate of 150 per day.

Anton said any business qualifies, from the corner variety store to the largest department store, including the dry-cleaning establishment, the fuel oil dealer, and the funeral home operator. The other category includes snowshoe clubs, fraternal organizations, schools, and churches.

The lottery law, given final approval last Fall by Maine voters in a referendum election, states that persons who will be able to sell lottery tickets include anyone already in business, and any non-profit organization.
