Marc Mauger Charest

AUSTIN, Texas – Marc Mauger Charest, 66, of Austin, Texas, passed away on July 20, 2021. Marc was born on Feb. 10, 1955, in Lewiston, Maine, where he was a beloved member of his community.

Marc, also known as Mauger, was a dedicated athlete throughout his life, leaving home at a young age to pursue his dream, first to Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI, and then to Kent School in Kent, Conn.

At Kent, Mauger excelled in the community, classroom, and athletics. In the words of one of the faculty members, Mauger was “one of the most sincere, honest, and hard-working young man I have ever met. He has given himself totally to the Kent community striving to live by example and directing others within the school’s basic philosophy”.

Mauger was elected Head of the Dining Hall for his senior year by a vote of students and faculty.

Academically, Mauger registered a perfect score on the AP French test, showing the pride in his French-Canadian upbringing.

Athletically, Mauger earned Varsity letters in Football, Lacrosse, and Hockey. His athletic accomplishments led him to be inducted into the Kent Athletic Hall of Fame, where he was recognized for his contributions to the Undefeated 1971 Football Team and the 1973 Housatonic Valley League Champions.

Marc’s passion for the game of Hockey came from the men in his family. His grandfather Joseph was still an active skater at age 70, and his father Laurier “Larry” played competitive hockey for almost 20 years culminating as a player coach on the 1951 IIHF USA team. Like his dad Mauger was a speedy skater and an excellent defensive player. His passion for the sport was evident during his time at Kent, where he played a crucial role in transforming Kent Hockey into one of the top programs in New England. His leadership skills were further highlighted when he served as Co-Captain and Co-MVP of the 1973 Housatonic Valley League Championship team.

After his time at Kent, Marc continued his impressive hockey career at Brown University, where he was part of the 1976 team reached the Frozen Four coming in at third place in NCAA Division 1. As quoted by Tim Bothwell (a teammate) in the Providence Journal (2/4/16) “It was a very well put together team in terms of everybody contributing, but we really did have a lot of speed. Wayne Lucky, Dave Roberts, they were the anchor of a pretty speedy checking line. Marc Charest was the third guy. They were as quick as anyone in college hockey then and they created a lot of problems for people”. Marc and the 1976 Team were inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame in 2016.

Marc is survived by his sister Liliette Charest Breton, brothers, George Charest and his wife Pauline, and Laurier “Larry” Charest Jr.; son Ian Charest Coffin, his wife Julie (Goodenow) Coffin, granddaughter Brittany A Coffin, and grandson Alexander J, Coffin, both of Harpswell, Maine; and four nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Laurier F. Charest Sr, his mother Fleur-Ange (Veilleux) Charest.
