100 Years Ago: 1924

Lewiston democrats are going to organize the French speaking women of the community. A meeting will be held in the aldermen’s room, Lewiston city building, at 7.30 p.m., Thursday night, when Mrs. Phil Howard of Rockland will speak. Her remarks will be in French. The meeting was called by Mrs. Ruth M. Coffin, prominent democratic worker among the women in Lewiston.

50 Years Ago: 1974

The graduating class at Lewiston High School gathered at Lost Valley Lodge Thursday evening for the annual class banquet.

The class advisor, Michael Beaulieu supervised the arrangements. Donald Rogers, master of ceremonies, was introduced by Sue Longley, class president, and he, in turn, presented the various speakers.

The toast to the class was given by Dennis McCannell; To the Girls, Jerry Bosse; To the Boys, Claire Carpenter; To the Foreign Students, Linda Biron; responses, Leda Andrade of Brazil and Lynette Ellworthy of Africa; To the Principal, James Bell; To the Superintendent, Jackie Gosselin; To the School, Janis Kisonak; To the Faculty, Diane Fontaine; To the Advisor, Peter Slovenski; To the Future, Marc Montminy: Senior Superlatives. 25 Years Ago: 1999

To honor the role the Androscoggin River has played in the town’s history, a canoe race is added to the Moxie Fest on July 11.

“With all the plans being made for the town’s bicentennial celebration, nothing was being mentioned about the river,” said Faye Brown, an organizer of the Chief Worumbo Androscoggin Bicentennial River Race. “We wanted to do something about that since the river is the reason the town is here in the first place.”
