Julian “Jack” Warren Philbrick

SCARBOROUGH – Julian “Jack” Warren Philbrick, Engineer/Inventor, 93, passed away May 26, 2024 in Scarborough.

Born on May 17, 1931 in Mexico Maine to parents Harry L. and Doris E. (Gallop) Philbrick, Jack was the oldest of five children who grew up in the beautiful hills on the family farm. He enjoyed fishing the brooks, hiking mountains, and exploring the backways by Jeep and VW Beetle.

He attended the Univ. of Maine Orono, and served in the USAF during the Korean War, where he trained pilots on escape routes.

He was predeceased by his wife, and fellow adventurer of over 54 years, Barbara (McGowan).

Jack studied at Northeastern Univ. then settled in Natick, Mass. He led an active life: hiking, canoeing, fishing, sailing, scuba, travelling, and enjoying his Maine camp. He loved music (sang in the choir at First Baptist and played multiple instruments), nature, ice cream, his Masonic brotherhood (Meridian, Jefferson, Colonial Craftsman, etc.), genealogy, and cribbage.

Jack retired as a VP of Advanced Instruments after 34 years with the medical electronics company, earning one co-patent along the way and taking many lunch hikes, where he happily educated his co-workers on flora and foraging.

His love of seafood had no limit; he was even able to categorize fried clams based on the town of their origin (Ipswich was his favorite). But for Jack, nothing compared to fresh Maine lobster, especially those freshly caught off John’s lobster boat in Jonesport!

Jack will be missed dearly by his children, Audrey Denison of Westford, Mass., Amy (husband Mark) Look of Poland, and Julian Philbrick of Leadville Colo.; his sister, Faith Schillinger; grandchildren, Jason, Brianna, Miranda, Heather, and Hannah; great-grandsons Finley and Kai; nieces, nephews; and many dear friends.

Friends and family plan to gather at Maine Audubon in Falmouth on June 15 at 1 p.m., and in Natick at Glenwood Cemetery on June 14 at 1 p.m. for a Masonic remembrance. You are invited to share memories online with the family at: http://www.meaderandson.com.

Jack requested that memorial donations may be made to Rails to Trails.
