100 Years Ago: 1924
A corps of earnest, sincere men and women are at work making their first reaches for a goal that will not be achieved before October. And then, when it is achieved, it will only be by virtue of unceasing work from now until the Harvest moon is shining. But it is in the interest of a cause that must succeed, and must not fall, if for no other reason than that in its long existence, the stigma of failure has never been associated with its name.
It is the Maine Music Festival that has enjoyed this wonderful record, and it is the same Maine Festival that its friends are determined will be able to say the proud boast when this fall’s concerts are over.
50 Years Ago: 1974
The lighting of a cigarette by an employee while spreading inflammable cement upon sponge rubber was pinpointed by Lewiston fire officials today as the cause of a blaze which yesterday damaged a portion of the Thomas J. Anthoine Co., Inc., rubber plant, injuring the plant foreman.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Governor Angus King is such a big promoter of Maine that he’s been known to take breaks during his motorcycle excursions around the state to greet visitors. But he can get carried away.
King was embarrassed last Friday when former House Speaker, Elizabeth Mitchell recounted a story about how King stopped to greet tourists during a motorcycle trip with Chief Justice Daniel Wathen.
“This went on for five minutes before Justice Wathen, giggling, told him he was in New Hampshire.” Mitchell said.
