Marianne Kelsey Orestis
RANGELEY – Marianne Kelsey Orestis, 79, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, with her children by her side. She was laid to rest on June 2, 2024, a date of profound significance as it marks the anniversary of the death of her beloved brother, a Vietnam War hero, who was killed in action on June 2, 1967.
Born Marianne Kelsey, her formative years were spent traveling with her family across various military stations in the U.S. and Europe. She was especially proud to have attended the American School of Paris while her family was stationed at NATO’s SHAPE Headquarters in France.
Her diverse career and experiences included roles as a freelance photographer, licensed pilot, radio DJ, Brownie Troop leader, and Daughters of the American Revolution member.
A passionate activist, she fought for the rights of the disabled and those suffering from mental health challenges. In 1985, she co-founded the Area IV Mental Health Services Coalition in Lewiston, Maine. Now known as Common Ties Mental Health Services, it continues to provide critical mental health support to the people of Greater Androscoggin County.
She was an advocate for Vietnam Veterans, writing and publishing two books, “Here, There, Everywhere: A Young Military Life” and “My Brother Stevie: A Marine’s Untold Story: Vietnam 1967”. Her work was recognized by the Department of Defense, which presented her with a Certificate of Honor, as part of the Nation’s 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration.
Her last years were spent living in Rangeley where she felt at home amidst the mountains and lupines. She enjoyed her books, artwork, and crochet while reflecting on life with a peaceful perspective.
