MECHANIC FALLS — Several town employees who usually work four hours when the town office is open on Friday will be asked to use vacation time, personal time, comp time or not get paid Friday, July 5.
Town Manager Vic Hodgkins asked the Town Council on Monday to consider that Friday as an emergency closure day so the nonessential employees would get paid for that day off. He said it would be a gesture of goodwill.
But councilors believed otherwise, saying it would not be fair to the other town employees who don’t work Fridays.
All Maine state offices will be closed July 5 per executive order of Gov. Janet Mills to extend the weekend holiday to state employees.
In other business, Councilor Darrell Young was chosen to continue as chairman and Sonny Morgan will serve as co-chairman.
The council’s next meeting is Monday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. The council is not scheduled to meet in July.
