SABATTUS — Crews from several area towns battled a house fire on Conway Street shortly after 7 p.m. Friday.
Early reports were that several people had escaped to safety but that there was still at least one pet inside the two-story house at 9 Conway St.
Firefighters from Sabattus, Litchfield and Monmouth battled the flames, and several explosions were heard from within the burning home.
There were no immediate reports of injury.
It was later reported that a dog had been rescued and taken for medical treatment.
Firefighters cut into the roof to get at the flames and ventilate smoke. The extent of fire, smoke and water damage was not immediately known.
By 9 p.m., the blaze was under control and investigation into the cause was getting underway.
Conway Street runs in a loop off High Street, next to Sabattus Pond.
