100 Years Ago: 1924
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gutmann of Lewiston send the Lewiston Journal greetings from “the top of the world”; the top of the Juggfrau, Switzerland, where they were on June 29th about 13,000 feet amid the snow. They are well and having a most enjoyable tour.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Westward the wagons!
Today, a bright red covered-wagon drawn by four perky ponies with their harness bells a-jingle is traveling westward from Monmouth, hoping to cover the miles between them and Lewiston by nightfall.
Riding in the cart are Richard Smith and wife Francine of Tuftonboro on Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H. With them are their daughter, Angela, who’ll be three years old Saturday, and – their curly black dog, Sootie.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Four houses within the state-owned Pineland Center property in New Gloucester have been sold to private individuals, it was announced Friday at the Pineland Conversion Committee meeting.
The committee is responsible for the sale and disposition of 33 buildings on the 230-acre property that was a state-run facility for mentally retarded people until its closure in 1996.
