NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Dorothy Henwood Thompson passed away on Oct. 16, 2023. She was born on Oct. 1, 1937, in Balaclava, Jamaica, to Charles Frederick and Myrtle Henwood. Dorothy was one of five siblings raised in Jamaica. She left the island at the age of 19 to move to New York City and then later joined her sisters living in Montreal. Dorothy married Leslie Bruce Thompson on June 9, 1962. They were married for 46 years until his passing on Sept. 21, 2008.
Dorothy was a loving and nurturing mother and grandmother. She and Bruce raised their children for four years in Belgium and then in Upstate New York. Dorothy was a volunteer at the Central Association for the Blind in Utica, N.Y. She was an avid golfer and tennis player. She played for the USTA tennis team representing Utica, N.Y., for several years. Dorothy often opened up her home at Thanksgiving providing a meal at her table for families living far from their country of origin. She and her husband moved to Ocala, Florida in 1991. She continued to play tennis and golf well into her 70s. Dorothy was a volunteer at Interfaith Services in Ocala and an active member in her church.
Dorothy was a true lover of people. Throughout her life, people were drawn to her and she was known to be the life of every party. She even played the piano which often led to family and friends gathering around her during social events.
Dorothy is survived by her son Mark Thompson (Joan), her daughter Karen Kraynak, her beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Julia and Johnny Kraynak, two siblings, Betty Smallridge (Colin) and John Henwood as well as many adoring family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brilliance Assisted Living Facility and Vistas Hospice Care in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, for the loving care of Dorothy during her final months.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Head of the Tide Cemetery in Newry where her ashes will be interred next to her husband Bruce. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with her family at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com.
