Governor Baxter has  appointed Howard D. Smith of Norway for his eighth consecutive term as Notary Public. Mr. Smith has been previously appointed for seven years, and the term for which he is now appointed will give him a continuous service of 56 years.

Governor Baxter wrote to Mr. Smith this note: “I shall be much pleased to reappoint you as a Notary Public, and hope that you will be spared so that you may be appointed seven times more. With kind personal regards I am ‘cordially yours'” Signed PERCIVAL P. BAXTER, Governor of Maine.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Moe Galarneau of Auburn was the top winner in last weekend’s 37.5-mile endurance race, sponsored by the Ellis River Trail Riders Association, beating out 42 other racers in the tough trail ride. The over two-hour race, held at Rumford, took Galarneau through old roads, wood trails, mountains, puddles, “the deepest you can find.” Said the racer, “It takes a lot of balance, a lot of endurance.”

25 Years Ago: 1999

The Auburn Police Department is distributing free police trading cards at the Auburn Police Station. On this week’s card is Patrol Officer Matt Tufts. He has been with the police department since 1997. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division and is an EMT-Basic. Tufts enjoys hunting and fishing.
