To Rangeley Highlander readers:
July 4th, we celebrate with sonic booms of fireworks that shake the air and are spectacular .. but at what expense? Animals are terrified. Our neighbor’s dog took off!! Only to be found many hours later several miles away trembling, mud covered and still frightened. Facebook is peppered with similar reports.
I saw a large male loon cruising 25 feet from shore eying nervously the many power boats and diving when firecrackers went off. Noise pollutes and harms the innocent creatures that share this planet.. but us humans think only of ourselves. We continue to blindly destroy our planet. How cruel! Wake up America.. celebrate our independence without harming all creatures that live with us!

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
