Marcelo Mayer and Blaze Jordan homered in the first inning, starting the Portland Sea Dogs on their way to a 6-2 win over the Reading Fightin Phils in an Eastern League game Friday night at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs jumped ahead quickly when Roman Anthony led off the bottom of the first with a triple and Mayer followed with a drive to right for his eighth home run of the season. Jordan made it 3-0 when he cleared the Maine Monster for his sixth home run.
Portland added two runs in the third on an RBI single by Kristian Campbell and a fielder’s choice grounder by Jordan.
Campbell, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, drove in Mayer with a fielder’s choice grounder in the seventh.
Isaac Coffey earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) over five innings. He struck out four, walked two and gave up four hits.
SOCCER
COPA AMERICA: The first lawsuits have been filed in connection with last weekend’s melees that broke out when fans without tickets forced their way into the Copa America soccer tournament final at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, with one person citing serious injuries and some ticket holders saying they were denied entry.
Miami-Dade County and federal court records show that as of Friday morning, at least four lawsuits had been filed against the stadium and CONMEBOL, South American soccer’s governing organization, over the chaos that broke out at the admission gates before Sunday’s game between Argentina and Colombia.
Stadium officials declined comment beyond saying they will refund unused tickets bought directly from organizers. They previously said they hired double the security for Sunday’s final compared to Miami Dolphins games and had exceeded CONMEBOL’s recommendations. The stadium will be hosting several games during the 2026 World Cup.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Tadej Pogacar took a giant step closer to clinching a third Tour de France title after winning another tough mountain stage, pulling away from Jonas Vingegaard to move five minutes ahead of his main rival with two days left.
Pogacar attacked with about 9 kilometers left on the final climb of 16 kilometers to the Isola 2000 ski resort in the Alps. Vingegaard could not follow as Pogacar chased after the Dane’s Jumbo Visma teammate, Matteo Jorgenson, an American rider.
Jorgenson was overtaken with two kilometers left as Pogacar soared to his fourth stage win at this year’s race and 15th Tour stage victory of his career.

FOOTBALL: University of Alabama trustees approved a resolution naming the football field at Bryant-Denny Stadium after former coach Nick Saban.
Saban retired from coaching in January after leading Alabama to six national championships in 17 seasons.
A field-naming ceremony will be held at the South Florida game on Sept. 7.
HORSE RACING
BAFFERT SUSPENSION: Churchill Downs rescinded its extended suspension of Bob Baffert, allowing the Hall of Fame trainer to resume racing his horses at the historic track and partner facilities after more than three years of banishment for a failed drug test of Medina Spirit at the 2021 Kentucky Derby.
The announcement came after Baffert issued a statement in which he took responsibility for now-deceased colt Medina Spirit’s failed drug test. Medina Spirit crossed the finish line first, but Kentucky racing stewards ultimately disqualified the horse and elevated runner-up Mandaloun to Derby winner.

NFL: The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a one-year deal with former Chicago Bears safety Eddie Jackson.
Jackson, 30, bolsters a safety position that features Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Williams. Jackson is expected to fill the role left by Geno Stone, who signed with Cincinnati after leading the AFC with seven interceptions last season.
