100 Years Ago: 1924

With the Lewiston branch of the Coon Ice Cream Co. operating day and night 365 days in the year it will be seen that this community’s share of the system’s million gallon yearly output is large. Well may Lewiston take pride in having one of the seven manufacturing plants of this great company located here.

50 Years Ago: 1974

A car was pulled out of Lake Andrews, in the middle of the  Bates College campus this morning.

Lewiston police discovered the car early this morning during a routine patrol of the area, the vehicle being visible under the few feet of water covering it.

25 Years Ago: 1999

A decades-old hazardous waste dump in Mexico, Maine, carved into a hillside overlooking the local golf course is being probed for possible water and soil pollution.

A half-dozen state workers spent three days recently on Farrington Mountain, sampling groundwater and soils, as well as sediment from two streams flanking the site.

The 5- to 10-acre landfill was used by the area’s paper mill, which is located in Rumford across the Androscoggin River. At the time the dump became inactive in the late 1970s, the mill was owned by Boise Cascade Corp., according to public documents. The mill now is owned by The Mead Corp.
