Georgette C. Mennealy
LEWISTON – Georgette Corinne (Ducharme) Mennealy, the beloved Matriarch of our family, passed away peacefully and with grace at the age of 103 on July 17, 2024.
She was born April 10, 1921, in Lewiston to George Napoleon Ducharme Jr. and Roseann (Lebrun) Ducharme. Georgette attended St. Patrick’s School and Wallace Grammar School, before graduating from Lewiston High School in 1939. She then attended Auburn Maine School of Commerce.
After college, Georgette took a job at the then “Bureau of Employment Security” as an Employment Specialist. She met her husband, Robert “Bob” Mennealy, at the Employment Office shortly after his return from World War II service, and they were married 51 years before Bob’s passing in 2000.
Georgette had a rare talent for nurturing relationships with local businesses and matching them with the perfect employees. No matter where she went, people would stop her on the street and thank her for finding them a job they loved, which made her children incredibly proud. Georgette retired in 1993 after over 45 years in public service.
Friends and family will remember Georgette’s abiding love of the ocean, as well as her unwavering commitment to her family. Her father had seven siblings, and Georgette treasured her memories of spending childhood summers with them at Lake Annabessacook and Old Orchard Beach. Georgette carried these summer traditions into adulthood, gathering her children, grandchildren, and extended family and friends for annual summer vacations at the beach.
After Bob retired, he and Georgette spent a portion of the next 10 winters in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area. They always looked forward to joining their large circle of friends from Lewiston who also wintered in Florida.
Georgette was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston, as well as an active participant in the Women’s Auxiliary of the National Association of Letter Carriers, where she made many of her lifelong friends. After her retirement from the State, Georgette began volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. After more than 20 years of service and 7,819 hours, Georgette began to lose her sight to macular degeneration, and regretfully left volunteering for good. Despite her vision loss, Georgette kept busy with family and friends – always making new companions wherever she went. Georgette was fiercely independent (and stubborn!) and with the help of family and many wonderful caregivers, lived in her apartment at Seville Place until she was 101 years old.
Georgette was predeceased by her husband, Bob; her daughter, Joann, who died at birth; her former son-in-law, Steve Register; and her sister and best friend, Cecile Hopkins.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Mennealy and his wife Nancy, of Lewiston, her daughter, Cathy Register of Cape Elizabeth; her grandson, Scott Mennealy and his wife Donnita of Laurel, Md., her grandson, Brad Mennealy and his wife Danielle of Pownal, her grandson, Dave Register of Brooklyn, N.Y., her granddaughter, Holly Register of Los Angeles, Calif.; her four great-grandchildren, Logan, Ellie, Corinne, and Will; and her loving niece and nephew, Patricia Edwards and Mike Hopkins.
The family would like to thank Andwell Home Health Hospice Services, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs’ Home of Maine, Olive Thompson of Sabattus for her many years of friendship and care, and her close friends from Seville Place.
Visitation will be held at the Albert and Burpee Funeral Home, 253 Pine St., Lewiston, on Friday, Aug. 2, from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., that will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in Lewiston. Committal prayers will follow graveside at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.
