Richard E. “Dick” Wing

AUBURN – Richard E. “Dick” Wing, 90, of Mechanic Falls passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2024. Dick was a resident of Mechanic Falls for most of his life. He was born on Feb. 17, 1934, the second son of Donald and Annie Wing. He lived in South Paris as a child before moving to Oxford and then to Mechanic Falls in his mid-teens.

Dick was a proud and active member of the community all his life. He always felt very strong about serving the community and making a difference for the citizens in Mechanic Falls. He joined the Mechanic Falls Fire Department as a volunteer when he was 18 years old. He was a third-generation firefighter following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. He was a member of the department for 63 years. During those years he helped with maintenance on the trucks, and he was the proud driver of Engine 1. He also served on the town council off and on for several years and was a member of the Charter Committee.

Dick was a member of Tyrian Lodge for 60 years. He was also a member of the Eastern Star and served as a board member for the Order of the Rainbow Girls where he received the Grand Cross of Color.

In February of 1968 he married his wife, Cora Janette Cummins. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in February of this year.

He started working at an early age, he then went into the service where he taught mechanics in Direct Automotive Support. After he got out of the service he worked as a mechanic on everything from cars to heavy equipment for various companies. Prior to retirement he worked as a truck driver hauling freight. He received a commendation from the State of Massachusetts for helping to save a family in a burning vehicle on one of his routes. After he retired, he pursued his passion and hobby of restoring old pickup trucks.

Dick loved his wife and family deeply. He was proud of his girls and their families. He will be missed by his loved ones.

The family would like to thank Clover Manor in Auburn for their care and support during his stay there.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Jan; two daughters; Rhonda Miller (Will) of Auburn and Deborah Kyllonen (Mike), two step daughters; Kathryn Beaule (Tim) and Jess Whitaker all of Mechanic Falls. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Michael Marquis (Traci), Angela Hamlin (Sean), Tracy Brassard (Donnie), and Dylan Card (Heather), two great grandchildren; Lillianna Spooner (Josh) and Mason Marquis and one great-great-grandchild; Cyrus Spooner. He is also survived by Winnie Belville, his first wife and mother of his two daughters.

Dick was predeceased by his parents, stepmother; Beulah Wing, a granddaughter; Michelle Marquis, a brother; Keith Wing, nephew; Lester Wing, and close cousin; Leatrice Eastman. 

Funeral services, to include a public Masonic service, will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at Chandler Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 26 W. Dwinal Street, Mechanic Falls with a time of visitation prior to the service from 11 a.m. to noon. A short committal service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls. We invite friends and family to join us for refreshments following the services at Tyrian Lodge #73, 474 South Main Street, Mechanic Falls.
