SOUTH PARIS – Forest Hammond, 91, died July 16, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris. He was born in Minot on Aug. 13, 1932, the son of Eldred C. and Julia Bryant Hammond. He graduated from Buckfield High School in 1950 and Farmington Teachers College in 1954.

He served in the United States Army from Aug. 5, 1954 to Aug. 5, 1956, in Japan, during the Korean Conflict. His brother Malvern Hammond also served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958 in Germany.

Forest started his civilian work life as a Teacher in the Turner Grade School for two years. His second teaching position was in the Waterboro Grade School for two years, he then served as Teacher/Principal in the Paris/Oxford/Norway School System for nine years.

After his 13 years in Teaching/Administration in these school systems, Forest decided to switch careers and go into the Cooking/Baking/Restaurant business. He held various positions while serving the Public: Owner/Chef at Hammond’s Variety in Mexico, Owner/Chef at Hammond’s Variety in Dixfield, Owner/Chef at The Bridge House in Buckfield, Chef at Goodwin’s Dairy in Oxford, Chef at the Chef’s Table in Oxford and Lounge/Bartender at the Country Way in Norway.

After Retirement, he and his Life’s Partner, Gladys Lee, bought a home in Turner and lived together until her death in 2017.

Forest Hammond’s parents, Eldred C. Hammond and Julia Bryant Hammond predeceased him, as have his many siblings, with the exception Mildred (Hammond) Vashaw, who currently lives in Florida, with her daughter Cheryl Frazzetto.

Memorial and burial services for Forest will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 1 p.m., at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Church Road in Hartford. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris.
