WOODSTOCK — Longtime Woodstock Town Manager Vern Maxfield announced this week he plans to retire in 2025.

He has been in the position for 36 years.

In a statement for the Tuesday select board meeting Maxfield said, “After a long and satisfying career serving as Woodstock’s Town Manager, I have decided that it is time to retire. It is with much thought and consideration that I came to this decision realizing that ‘it was time.’”

He said that leaving the position next year would give the select board time to look for a new person for the position. He plans to retire July 31, 2025.  “They have asked me to help with the transition, which I will gladly do for them and the town,” said Maxfield.

He began the job in Woodstock on Aug. 1, 1988. Previously he had been town clerk in Waterford, from 1985 to 1988, and had also served as a selectman in that town for three years prior to becoming town clerk.

“I have been proud to serve as town manager and am very grateful for the support I have had along the way,” he said. “I am thankful to the residents of Woodstock for allowing me to serve them all these years.”
