OXFORD — A fire of unknown origin destroyed the Record Lumber Sawmill, located at 60 East Oxford Road, on Friday night, officials said.
“It was a total loss,” Oxford Fire Chief Ashley Wax-Armstrong said Saturday. “It was fully engulfed upon our arrival. We don’t know what caused it.”
According to Wax-Armstrong, there were no injuries or fatalities. No damage to the surrounding properties was reported.
The fire is believed to have started sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning.
“The property was just over 14,000 square feet,” Wax-Armstrong said, noting the damage is “estimated to be around $2.5 million.”

“There was about four forklifts. There was a couple of other items used in sawmills, like planers and such in there too,” she added.
A total of 11 fire departments from nearby communities responded to the fire, Wax-Armstrong said, including Oxford, Norway, Paris, West Paris, Otisfield, Auburn, Casco, Harrison, Naples and Sweden.
Record Lumber Sawmill was a midsize, family-owned operation. The lumber supplier has had its Route 26 location since 2005. Members of the Record family could not be reached for comment Saturday.
The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.
