50 Years Ago: 1974

Auburn Police Chief Peter Mador was the recipient of an award given today by the Regional Blood Banks of Maine for the APD’s outstanding contributions to the blood donor program.

In a survey of police departments across the State, the blood program staff found members of the APD to be the most active blood donors with over 50 pints donated in the past two years.

The Whittier Middle School complex doesn’t look like an average school. With its high ceilings, skylights and tile floors, the school has elements of an upscale office building or a shopping mall.

And that’s exactly how school officials wanted it to look.

“A lot of schools make you wonder ‘Why would people want to spend a lot of time here?”” said Robert Wall, Union 29 superintendent. “We want students to want to be here.”

On Sept. 1, 475 high school students and 185 middle school students from Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot will begin the school year in the 135,000-square-foot, $18 million building that took 18 months to construct.
