100 Years Ago: 1924
Albert W. Smith of Skowhegan left Thursday afternoon for Brunswick where today he attended the reunion of Civil War veterans of the 20th Maine Regiment.
Mr. Smith was the only Skowhegan man to join that regiment. He enlisted in 1864 at the age of 17 years and served nearly a year.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Lewiston police are investigating a minor theft which took place at a Lewiston apartment on Thursday.
Mabel Gervais of 1762 Blake St., reported the theft of a jar of pennies valued at $3. Officer Max Ashburn is investigating.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Carla Gill of Minot traveled to the Standing Rock Reservation in Sioux Falls, S.D., in July to volunteer her time and work to help repair the reservation elementary school. Members of the crew worked in 100 degree temperatures to repair flooring, doing other work in the high school and attending a children’s summer camp as mentors.
Gill is an active member and volunteer at the First Universalist Unitarian Church in Auburn. She volunteers as a companion to the elderly, assists in building projects and works on community outreach programs.
