100 Years Ago: 1924

The most extensive public playground program that the city has ever had comes officially to a close Friday with a play circus, minstrel show and patriotic pageant announced by the Director Wright of Lewiston Community Service who has had charge of the children’s playfields.

Thousands of children have attended the various playgrounds here under efficient leaders; they have played to their hearts’ content.

50 Years Ago: 1974

The retiring plant superintendent of the Philips Elmet Corp. in Lewiston was honored at a reception Friday afternoon at the plant. Alfred Hormann, 18 Pleasant St., Lewiston, left the Lisbon Street facility after 45 years with the firm.

Hormann came from his native Germany in 1929 and became associated with American Electro Metals Corp., which was acquired by North American Philips Corp. in 1962.

25 Years Ago: 1999

A Buckfield parents group showed its support for education Monday by serving breakfast to SAD 39 staff members on their first day of school.

“We are a group of parents and community members who feel that if we paddle in the same direction we will have good schools,” said Terry Hayes of Buckfield, SAD 39 board chairwoman. The group’s slogan is Building Effective Schools Together.
