Lennie (Singer) Butler

AUBURN – Lennie (Singer) Butler, 103, passed away on Aug. 29, 2024, at the Chapman House in Auburn.

Lennie was born in Lumpkin, Ga. on June 14, 1921, the daughter of Hallam and Florida (Rainville) Singer. When she was very young, her father died of tuberculosis while serving as a Medic in World War I. After his death, the family moved to South Portland, where Lennie grew up and graduated from South Portland High School.

In 1940, she married Robert Butler of Portland and they had two daughters, Sandra and Susan. When her daughters were young, the family spent many enjoyable summers at the Butler camp at Little Sebago Lake.

In 1955, the family moved to Auburn. Lennie went to work at Snow’s, Inc.. and eight years later, started working at First Bank (now Camden National Bank) where she was promoted to Asst. Vice President. After 20 years of banking, she retired in January, 1984.

Lennie thoroughly enjoyed her retirement, having plenty of time to spend with family and friends. She loved family gatherings with her two daughters and their husbands, three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren.

She joined a Bridge Club with a wonderful group of ladies, learned to play golf, did some traveling and loved spending the month of March in Florida. She loved sewing and one of her favorite hobbies was creating miniature dolls which she usually gave for gifts. Lennie was a sports enthusiast, never wanting to miss a Red Sox, Celtics or Patriots game. She was also proud of her 25 years spent volunteering at CMMC as a Patient Rep.

Lennie is survived by her two daughters, Sandra (and husband Lars) Magnusson, Susan Kendall; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Riley, Leah Crossley and Andrea Noyes; her nephew, Dan Olsen, who she had a very special relationship with; three great-granddaughters, five great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Robert; sisters Berta Young and Janice Shanahan, brothers Hallam Singer and George Olsen.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to thank Bonnie and the staff at the Chapman House.

A memorial service for Lennie will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at The Fortin Group Funeral Home in Auburn.
