The second step of the post office on the Park Street side is giving patrons much anxiety because it is loose and many are afraid it is going out into the street some day.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Paperless banking may be implemented in Maine by the middle of next year. About 50 bankers from throughout the state heard a presentation Friday by Donald McGowan of the New England Automatic Clearing House (NEACH) at a meeting of the Maine Bankers Association in Augusta.

MBA president Widgery Thomas Jr. described NEACH as a system of electronic banking which may eventually eliminate the need for paper checks.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Supporters of the ordinance banning jet skis from Tripp Lake and Middle and Upper Range ponds in Poland were elated that the measure passed 128-97 on Monday.

“Wow!” exclaimed Sandra Norton, president of the Range Pond Environmental Association. “Terrific,” added Barbara Shapiro of the Tripp Lake Association.

Both Norton and Shapiro agreed the environmental and safety arguments presented at two public hearings convinced people to vote in favor of the ordinance.
