LEWISTON — A late first-half push carried over into the second half, when Jasper Hackett scored the only goal in Camden Hills’ 1-0 win over Lewiston in a showdown of the top teams in Class A North boys soccer Friday at Don Roux Field.

The Windjammers were attacking in the final two minutes of the opening half, but the Blue Devils defensive line held strong until halftime.

“We always like to start strong in any half of any game, just to keep the momentum going from the previous half,” Hackett said.

Camden Hills (11-1-1) kept the pressure on early in the second, and on a corner kick by Connor Middleton, Hackett knocked the ball into the goal with a header in the 50th minute.

“I saw all ball and I heard the keeper call for it, and I knew I was in front of him,” Hackett said. “To see the ball go in was just incredible.”

The Windjammers then held off the Blue Devils for the remainder of the game.

“It was a little tense, and we definitely conceded a lot of ground in the last 15-20 minutes,” Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley said. “Credit to Lewiston, they didn’t quit, they kept coming at us. I thought we held our ground and I don’t think there were too many strong chances.”

Hurley said that Friday’s game was a good tune-up for the upcoming postseason. Lewiston coach Dan Gish agrees.

“It’s a playoff-type atmosphere,” Gish said. “It’s good to go through it. They earned the win. We made one mistake, and that sometimes can determine a win or a loss. Hats off to them; they did a good job. I think we could have done a few things attacking-wise. We could have cleaned a few things up and taken advantage of some opportunities.

“I was impressed with the way our guys played. We caused some trouble with their attack and defense. I thought we played well enough to win.”

Hurley credited the Windjammers defense for keeping the Blue Devils (10-2-1) off the scoreboard.

“Those guys are playing really well together and they do a good job keeping the distance between each other nice and close,” Hurley said. “They knew what kind of attack we would see, and know how to defend against that.”

Goalie Brian Leonard made four saves for Camden Hills. The biggest was in the 26th minute when he dove to stop the ball from curling in.

“I think he was going to cross it in, because they play those through balls a lot,” Leonard said. “I positioned wrong, and I had to make the save. I didn’t expect him to shoot it.”

Leonard high-pointed the ball on a 35-yard free kick into the box in the 30th minute.

“I mean, we could have made him move around a little bit more,” Gish said. “Some of the shots were, you know, directly at him. So, you know, he didn’t have to move too much. So, but, you know, he does a good job. Hey, they did a good job.”

The Blue Devils had two chances come up empty in the final minute — a header on a goal that was called offsides and a shot toward the goal at the buzzer.

“That’s a good sign of a team that’s going into the playoffs, is that there’s no quit, they didn’t give up,” Gish said. “They kept working right to the final second. They didn’t feel sorry for themselves, and hey, we were in a position where we could have tied it. We had opportunities that we just didn’t finish.”

Lewiston goalie Will Diamond-Stanic finished with five saves.
