Bec Showalter picks up litter Saturday morning at Simard Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston during a citywide volunteer cleanup effort. Showalter, who is nonbinary, says they like to walk their dog at the park and enjoy it most when it’s very clean. “I’ve done the cleanup before, and I always choose this park. They’ve never told me no!” Showalter posted a call-out on Facebook for friends to join, but nobody responded. Volunteers could pick up litter in any Lewiston neighborhood, park, or trail, and Lewiston Public Works arranged to collect the bags of litter midday. “Hopefully next spring more people will come out,” Showalter said.  Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
