Marie Thompson

JAY – Marie Thompson died Nov. 5, 2024, at home. She was born June 5, 1931, in Wilton to Walter and Laura Cushman, and was one of 10 children.

She attended school in Wilton and, at age 16, began working at the Wilton Hotel where she learned to make biscuits and pies. She excelled at both and made the best biscuits ever. Mom was well known for her chocolate cream and lemon meringue pies. She was a wonderful cook.

She married Clifton “Skip” Thompson on June 25, 1949, and they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past June. She worked at the North Jay Post Office and then returned to school and joined her mother-in-law as a beautician at Ruby’s Beauty Shop – a job she loved for many years.

She and Skip enjoyed camping and fishing. They took several cruises and traveled cross-country to California, as well as many trips to North Carolina. She was a talented seamstress. As her grandchildren will tell you, she made fabulous pickles. For years she made homemade chocolates at Christmas. She loved playing cards, especially if she was winning, playing Bingo, and the slots, all animals and all children. More than anything, she loved her family. She just loved having her family around her – birthday parties or any excuse to see her beloved children and grandchildren. She loved Thanksgiving and Christmas and just having her family together.

She was a member of Community Grange and the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Skip; son Steve Thompson and his wife Cheryl, and her daughter Deb Adams; her grandchildren Jason Adams of Portland, Jennifer Clark and husband Michael of Readfield, Tim Adams and wife Rachel of Fayette, and Susan Brackley and husband Clif of Farmington; her great grandchildren, Nate Clark and his partner Megan Knowles, Alex Clark; Ben, Josh and Zack Adams; and Jamie, Eli, and Jordan Brackley; her sisters, Kay Brackley and Jeanette Dunham, and sisters-in-law Betty Murphy, Sandy Cushman and Linda Cushman.

She was predeceased by her much-loved son-in-law Charlie Adams; sisters Barbara Wardwell, Maxine Given, Mary Hydes and Roberta Brown, brothers Donald, Ronald and Leeland Cushman, sister-in-law Shirley Rand and her husband Carl; and her beloved dog Sophie.
