Donald F. Allen

NORWAY – Loving husband and father Donald “Don” Allen, 86, passed away early Friday morning on Oct. 25, 2024, at West Roxbury VA Hospital after a long battle of kidney disease.

Born Nov, 24, 1937, in Rochester, NH to parents Leighton and Muriel Allen of Northwood, NH. Don was the middle of three children, Skip being the oldest and Ross the youngest.

Don served in the Army from 1956 -1959 in communications. He was stationed in Germany and served proudly during that time. Upon leaving the Army, he worked for various positions in the automotive industry until he found his true passion, insurance. Don worked for MetLife and Horace Mann insurance for a combined 25 years.

In 1965, Don met his loving wife Merry in Portsmouth, NH and they married in 1967. They loved each other fiercely and often called one another by the nicknames “Kitten” and “Chiefy”. They truly completed the other and shared 57 years of love, laughter, and happiness. Together they attended the Church of Christ in South Paris every Sunday and Wednesday, and could be found singing in the pews with their closest friends. Don loved to tell old stories, especially about his time in Culinary school, the Army, growing up on his family farm, and his time at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, as well as sharing as many terrible jokes as he could remember.

The only thing he loved more than Ocean Point in Boothbay, Maine, was his family. Don loved to stay with family in Boothbay Harbor and could often be found lounging in the front yard asleep or sitting on the rocks at Ocean Point.

Don was proud of his eight grandchildren, Katrina “Kat” Duffin (husband Eric), Anastasia “Ana” Jang (husband Tyler), Christopher “Chris” Allen, Ellie Villalba, Grahm and Owen Cox, Lennox Skates, and Akula Allen. He also had his first great grandchild, Lilith Duffin, born on the day before his passing.

Don was predeceased by both parents, and brother Skip. He is survived by wife Merrill “Merry” Allen of 57 years; five children, son George “Tad” Allen of Auburn, son David Allen (wife Lauren) of Boothbay Harbor, daughter Dawn Bickford (husband Scott) of Augusta, son Timothy “Tim” (Geoy) Allen (wife Elyse) of Gig Harbor, Wash., and daughter Manda Allen of South Paris. He is also survived by remaining brother Ross Allen of Virginia.

His family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta and all of the team at Fresenius Kidney Care in Auburn for their many years of dedication and care.

There will be a Funeral Service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, at Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris, ME. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris.
