Constance Verlene Spears

TURNER – Constance Verlene Spears of Turner passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at the age of 88. Verlene, or Bridget as some knew her, was a strong and fiercely independent woman. Having lost her sight many years ago, Verlene managed to live independently in her home with the dedicated help of her brother James, the kindness of her neighbors, and the company of her adored cats. She adapted to life’s challenges, all the while displaying generosity, creativity, and a love of life.

Verlene was born August 19, 1936. As a young woman growing up in Auburn, Verlene was an adventurer. Graduating from Edward LIttle in 1954, she moved to New Orleans for a time, where she married. Returning to Maine, she worked at the Libbey Mill in Lewiston and became a trusted union leader. Motorcycle riding, frequenting yard sales, and gardening were some of her pleasures. Verlene always wore one of her fancy fedoras on outings, drawing comments from many about her appealing style and character.

Verlene is survived by her grandson Richard Kirk, her granddaughter Althea; her daughter Rebecca Kirk and husband Gary; nieces, nephews, and other family members. She is also survived by her brother James Hewey and sister-in-law Sheryl, who will miss her greatly. Verlene was predeceased by her parents Vernard and Pauline Duran Hewey; her brother Peter Hewey and sisters Susanne Reid and Ruth Keeler. She will be missed by many, especially her dear childhood friend Doris, her new friend Kate, and her cat Chili.

A huge thank you to Jackie and Tom from the Greene Village Pharmacy, along with many medical personnel, who kindly and expertly tended to Verlene’s medical needs. In a final act of kindness, Verlene donated her remains to the UNE College of Medicine for research.
